Pillow seems to be included in the recent trend (?).
So, if you install it without thinking,
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PIL SETUP SUMMARY
--------------------------------------------------------------------
version Pillow 2.7.0
platform linux 3.4.0 (default, Apr 11 2014, 13:05:11)
[GCC 4.8.2]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
*** TKINTER support not available
*** JPEG support not available
*** OPENJPEG (JPEG2000) support not available
--- ZLIB (PNG/ZIP) support available
*** LIBTIFF support not available
*** FREETYPE2 support not available
*** LITTLECMS2 support not available
*** WEBP support not available
*** WEBPMUX support not available
--------------------------------------------------------------------
To add a missing option, make sure you have the required
library, and set the corresponding ROOT variable in the
setup.py script.
I'm told that some libraries are missing, so
$ sudo apt-get install libtiff5-dev libjpeg8-dev zlib1g-dev libfreetype6-dev liblcms2-dev libwebp-dev tcl8.6-dev tk8.6-dev python-tk
With this, for the time being,

After that, I want to be able to use jpeg2000, so
$ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/openjpeg.mirror/2.0.1/openjpeg-2.0.1.tar.gz
$ tar zxvf openjpeg-2.0.1.tar.gz
$ cmake .
$ make
$ sudo make install
Now it is JPEG2000 compatible.
I don't plan to use TkInter, so it's not supported.
