It is a story of installing Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS on the famous machines MB402, MB403, MB404 of the old MacBook.
0.1 Burn the setup disc to a DVD-R. 0.2 Memory is 2 GB or more. To be honest, it's tough if you don't make it 4 GB. Please replace the 0.3 disk with an SSD. 0.4 Connect to a wired LAN.
It was hard to start at 18.04, but this time it's okay. It has been improved.
1.1 After turning on the power, insert the DVD in haste and press and hold [option].
1.2 When the boot selector appears, select "Windows" on the optical disc to boot.
2.1 Be sure to turn on "Download updates during Ubuntu installation". If you turn it on, the installation will be completed quickly, but if it is off, you will get stuck in the language-related mud after the installation is completed, and you will probably conclude that it is easier to re-install than to solve the problem.
2.2 Setup can be run normally without any problems. Unfortunately, the built-in Wi-Fi is not available. I can't even select "Install graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and third-party software in additional media formats".
2.3 For the type of installation, it is best to remove the disk and install. There is no easier option than this.
Broadcom will try a familiar installation.
sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt install bcmwl-kernel-source
reboot
Now I think I can connect to the router and hurray, but when I try to open the site in Firefox, it doesn't open. As you can see by pinging, the packet transmission loss is so large that it cannot be used. The day may come when the problem will be resolved, but let's give up for the time being.
In this era, I think it's easier to use the Ethernet to Wi-Fi bridge. You can buy it for a few thousand yen, and you won't take your Macbook out.
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
sudo snap refresh
sudo reboot
I think it's an easy win except for the Wi-Fi problem. There is a punch line that I can not tell at all what has changed since 20.04 for the part used in MATE. If you replace and add a black Mac, you may still be able to use it.
